Hi just wondering if anyone has any ideas why only on a cold start when I put it in first gear in triptronic no numbers come up on the dash only a line and it starts making a beeping noise. this has only just started happening over the last couple of days. once the cars warmed up triptronic seems to work fine.Auto also makes a bit of a clunking sound sometimes when changing down in auto from 3rd to 2nd Also can anyone recommend a good mechanic that has experience with Subaru and that wont screw me over in chirstchurch

Find an auto trans specialist. But to be completely blunt , you screwed yourself over when you bought an automatic subaru. They're notoriously bad sorry to say.
When was the last time you had the trans serviced! e.g oil flush and filter change! That could explain the harsh shifting but the dial on the dash sounds more like a computer related issue.

Yeah the auto transmissions on wrx's are far too weak to handle the power.

So go to an auto trans specialist and get some real concise answers.
