Changing vehicle class?

My sister is purchasing an Estima tomorrow and when she asked the dealer to remove all the back seats as she'll be using it to transport her paintings he said yes but she would have to put them back in every 6mths for warrant. Or she could change the class, then she wouldn't have to put them back in. Just talking with a friend she said the rego prices are different as it would then be classed as a commercial vehicle. Is this the case! and does anyone know what the rego price would be! Thanks very much.

nope, just remove the seats *and* the belts, and Bob's your uncle

Don't take it to the dealer for a WOF.

If you remove all the rear seats it will no longer meet the criteria for "passenger car" It will be ve a comercial van, which is a much higher registration cost. If you get caught, you will be up for a nice fine.

this is correct, i had to put extra seats in my ford escort panelvan to avoid the extra rego costs of being a "commercial" vehicle.

Its about another $100 per year unless its a diesel, then it would be more.

True, I was busy thinking "get a WOF" rather than changing from MB to NA.

so if you take out seats, you pay more. if you have a bus, which has lots of seats, is rego cheaper!

Thanks very much guys I really appreciate it. I phoned NZ transport and its only $46 a year more for rego of goods vehicle so she's going to change the class. Dodgy dealer told her to just put them back in every 6 mths for warrant. Glad I asked in here.

Could possibly change it to a utility vechile!

I only pay $50 i think it was last time, for 6 months rego

I dont know if this is right but i thought someone one told me that if you take all the seats and belts out and get a wof.if you then put them back in and try to get a wof you have to have the vehical re certified

If you take all the seats and belts out you have to change the class of the vehicle as it's no longer a passenger vehicle. So yes If you then want to use it as a passenger vehicle again you'd have to change the class again.
