Driving with park lights on! What the hell are

The problem with headlights on in a road that is covered by good street lighting is that they cause to much brightness and glare and can easily hide pedestrians and cyclists.(esp when raining) It is easier to see when there is an even spread of light, Bright lights cause shadows and your eyes are automatically attracted to the brightness of the lights.
So it is better to have an even spread of light with no brightness, glare or shadows that can hide other road uses.

Maybe we should not have side park lights on our cars at all, No one has ever seen a car parked with there park lights on, I mean no one does that any more. We dont need park light s at all for anything

I have actually, in the country I often see people stopped on the side of the country road. Come again! Its handy if you want to be seen and have your main headlights off drawing your battery big time. They do have uses.

One simple solution to that problem you seem to have .DRIVE SLOWER AND TO THE CONDITIONS.opps hit the caps lock um!

ema1, Aug 14, 8:28am
But it makes my point even though the caps lock fat finger typo worked spot on I reckon!

My vehicle does not have park lights. It has side lights.
My motto is, "see and be seen"

I flash my high beams to those dim drivers but judging from seeing their brake lights flashing they did not get the message. Obviously they think I am warning about speed cameras. At least I am slowing them down but those dim drivers should be parked on the roadside while their parking lights are on.

On a lighter note there should be a light dimmer on the headlights, faster you go the brighter your lights come! So if you drive 5Km/hr you would get 5 watts power on your lights and respectively 100 km/hr you would get full 100 watts. No, I am only joking.

My Clio Sport has auto on headlights.

Plenty of days this week where its been drizzly and gray after 4pm in the afternoon the car switches them on automatically, and for good reason.

johnf_456, Aug 23, 7:49am
Hasn't this thread had its day instead of been bumped all the time. Its just getting dribble dribble.

ema1, Aug 23, 8:43am
And what's your position regarding the thread title then!
A constructive answer would be more beneficial than what you state here!

I can't see what all the discussion is about. This issue is a no-brainer. You have PARK lights (or 'side markers') for when you are PARKED. You don't use them when you are driving. Simple. You have headlights for when you are driving. You don't leave them turned on when you are parked. [Well, some people do, sure - due to forgetfulness.] But as a rule, headlights are not used for when you're parked up. If everyone got with the play, there would be no reason to debate this at all.

I've had enough with the C o c ks here in Chch driving in dim and raining days with no or park lights so (my lights are not the best) I drive with my lights on full beam SO I CAN SEE THEM. And before the full beam POLICE attack me I've only been flashed twice in the last 3 months.

ema1, Aug 23, 9:06am
Copy that.No brainer for sure.

ema1, Aug 23, 9:08am
Even worse if they are driving dark colored vehicles.saw some last weekend when I was there.f/wits.

matthew111, Aug 23, 7:53pm
excellent safety feature.

timmo1, Aug 24, 1:25am
WpMoore- I agree. Trying to judge distance and speed of a car with headlights on is harder than trying to do the same with headlights off IF the lighting is sufficient.

If the light is not, then of course, turn your headlights on.

petermcg, Aug 24, 4:33am
Park lights are not much use for anything else apart from letting people see you when you are driving,, no one uses them when they are parked.

shimmy93, Aug 24, 6:44am
it annoys me when people drive with their headlights on during the day mainly because of another thing that annoys me which is superbright headlights which look like high beams

ema1, Aug 24, 7:40am
Funny how you were almost advocating having the park lights only on in street lit areas of parts of Christchurch in the wet.etc in one of your earlier threads!.How about some consistency eh!

gadgetman, Aug 24, 11:15am
Maybe he has seen the light! And changed his mind and now drives with Dipped beam on during the poor visibility conditions!

wpmoore, Aug 24, 11:37am
Didn't mention anything about Christchurch. But yes I still believe if there is proper street lighting which lights up other road uses, it is better to have your sidelights on rather than your headlights esp in the wet where glare and reflections can hid people behind the headlights. In other words there is a more even spread of light.
And I do put on my lights only if the condtions warrant their use.

ema1, Aug 25, 12:07am
Correct you didn't mention Christchurch .Oops but I did see folks tearing around like there's no tomorrow up there 10 days ago and they were not easy to see with no lights on at all and in heavy drizzle to boot.
It's a matter of "training" the masses as to when & where to use their lights but even the laws are flouted regularly in this respect so .we just go on in a no win situation I guess.PITY. But at least in my own case folks out there won't have any excuse about NOT seeing me.What others do is their affair I guess.Nuff said.
You just can't please em all obviously.

these drivers trying to do! Save power!

intrade, Dec 18, 6:15am
at night!

75ta, Dec 18, 6:16am
Park lights make you completely visible in all conditions. I thought everyone knew that.
