Can anyone tell me how big these are - looking for a hatchback sort of car but like the idea of extra seats, would these fit the bill or are they bigger like people movers/ vans! Also an idea of how they drive/ grunt/ fuel suckage would be great.

Have never seen a funcargo either (I just don't take any notice of cars till I HAVE to buy a new one!) - kind of just want to know if they would be classed as a van, a station wagon or a hatchback for size (upgrading from a very tiny hatchback so not keen on going too big) - in the position of getting rellies to purchase the car on behalf so won't see it till it gets here - don't want to say 'try and find this kind" and then end up with a monster:D

Have you considered a Multipla!

dc72, Mar 29, 11:22pm
have you heard the expression "hens teeth"!
Be nice if I could find one locally. weird WEIRD seating in them though

dc72, Mar 29, 11:24pm
Cool, will ask if they have any of them - they don't sound too large, thank you!

I could really really upset you and tell you I heard of an 03 with 120K on the clock that went at Turners for about $2500 a few weeks back!

Japan definitely have them but I don't think they got any diesels and I have never seen an import because they sell for good money over there (or at least used to, I havn't checked Jap pricing for 12 months.)

Keep a good eye on Turners Papariccardo. On a funny side note, it won't suit youbut I might actually sell mine soon. will be replacing it with another though!

The one I got left with when I closed the Biz is a petrol and its pretty shabby inside from being a work wagon so will be nice to get a newer higher spec Diesel one.

BTW, now I know your looking I will keep an eye out for you!

We have a 2003 Spacio 1500. Drives well but won't set any performance records. It only gets used in city driving and is averaging 8 litres per 100km's. 4.275 metres long, so not too big. Very roomy in the front and middle seats. With the front seats right back, I can fit in the back comfortably (i'm 6'2").
As Kaz said, the 3rd row of seats are very cramped. They are really only for amputees or people you don't like.

]When you say you are going to sell yours you are of course making the assumption someone will actually give you money for it. You may end up swapping it for a box of pumpkins.

Sacré bleu!
That's 35% dearer to run than a Multipla!

How do you like dem Pumpkins.

dc72, Mar 30, 1:31am
Well i can think of a few people I could sit in the back then ;)
I showed hubby the Fiat and he's dead keen, says he likes the quirky way it looks - has some character unlike most cars. pity they are so hard to find, especially as we want to get one from a dealer to get a warranty with it.

boss_hogg, Mar 30, 1:31am
;-)

thejazzpianoma, Mar 30, 1:33am
That one in the link is at a dealer. I wouldn't buy a mechanical warranty on one though, for what they will charge you its a joke.

Despite it being super reliable and cheap to fix they will label it "European" and charge you the same as they would for some state of the art rocket ship.

Better to spend some of the money on making sure the cambelt service is up to date.

craig04, Mar 30, 1:35am
Yep. I accept the premium we pay for owning something as unique and character filled as a beige Toyota.

P.S. How did you get the acute above the e!

thejazzpianoma, Mar 30, 1:36am
LOL, ummm. I have to admit. copy and paste. *hangs head in shame*

craig04, Mar 30, 1:42am
Actually, they will label it "European" because it comes from Europe.
By the way, isn't there something else you would like to mention about the Multipla! It may just be the icing on the cake.

thejazzpianoma, Mar 30, 1:43am
Further to the warranty thing, by all means get a quote. I think too you can get a warranty on a private sale one from the AA etc as well if you really had to have one.

But, I find a good litmus test for whether a warranty is worth it is to sit down and say, what are the really bad things that could happen, whats the likelyhood and what does it cost to fix!

With the Multipla so long as you service the cambelt on time there is very little thats noticeably expensive thats likely to go wrong. It is possible to break a differential/gearbox on them but you have to be doing burnouts or thrashing the living daylights out of one to achieve that. Even if you did manage that going about it right you would fix it for less than what the Warranty would likely cost.

The engine is about the most reliable and well proven modern diesel on the market so is highly unlikely to give you any trouble.

If you have trouble with one its more likely to be a wheel cylinder seizing from not changing the brake fluid when you should or other small cheap couple of hundred dollar fix's. These sort of things are not usually worth the hassle, cost and excess payments of the Warranty.

BTW, I wouldn't be so optimistic on some other vehicles.

thejazzpianoma, Mar 30, 1:44am
I was actually very tempted when you said there wasn't much room in the third row of the Toyota to say "oh so you couldn't even fit a couple of miniature horses in the back"

But I restrained myself. being the gentleman that I am, I didn't want to hate on the Toyota too much.

For the benefit of poster 1 - its a private joke relating to a poster who wanted a car to tow miniature horses. I suggested she just get a Multipla and put them in the back. inside a plywood horse box of course. Never quite lived that one down.

BTW on a serious note, what I was meaning about the Warranty companies is they are very short sighted and just put a big premium on anything not made in Asia or Australia. Its just ridiculous as parts and repairs for the likes of the Multipla are in most cases the same or cheaper and easier than an equivilent Toyota or Mazda product.

craig04, Mar 30, 1:50am
Miniature horses! What on earth are you smoking! I was talking about the service intervals. Now the OP is going to think that all Multipla owners are Dr Dolittle impersonators.

thejazzpianoma, Mar 30, 1:54am
LOL, good point. Yes super long service intervals and servicing is cheap. 20'000km between oil changes is pretty amazing and writes off the wives tales about diesels costing more to service.

dc72, Mar 30, 2:11am
I must say I have a soft spot for a diesel, the poor beast we are replacing was one, and my car before that was one too.
Just a stupid question though - if the multipla is so hard to get hold of how can the parts/ engine be so cheap to fix! (And how spendy is the cambelt replacement!- some cars it's cheaper to throw away the car when the cambelt goes!)

dc72, Mar 30, 2:12am
(and just quietly, good to know that if I was ever mad enough to own miniature horses or extra oversized dogs there would be space in the boot ROFLMAO)

gammelvind, Mar 30, 2:53am
As an alternative to the Spacio is the Toyota Nadia, a little bigger, but with huge legroom in the back. We have one of these, its economical, a good sized hatchback. Looked at a spacio intitially but the Nadia had everything the spacio had with more space and features. Everybody who has ridden with us has been stunned by the legroom.

dc72, Mar 30, 2:53am
Nope not seen the multipla or the toyotas, long story short our car died we don't have a 2nd vehicle and live in the wops, hence trying to research as much as poss then asking rellies to test drive and buy - will be buying somewhere between waikato and northland. Any advice will be gratefully received ;D

dc72, Mar 30, 3:00am
the Nadia is only 5 seats though yes!

gammelvind, Mar 30, 3:09am
It is but the extra seats on the spacio is only for midgets lol
