Alternator advise please

planted4u, Apr 15, 3:01am
My launch has two alternators the one for the start batteries has a tag that has 17ACR on it. This one is stuffed. What vechle in this off and what amps is the output!
Can the output be made more or what alternator has a higher output that would bolt straight on.
Thanks

17 ACR = Lucas , common old alternator from cortinas, escorts, minis, bmc, etc . 14V 35A . they where good in there day.it's not hard to fit any other jap alternator from the wreckers just a bit of fiddling with spacing on the mount brackets with a few washers and maybe a bit of a cut and weld on the adjusting bracket.

bigfatmat1, Apr 15, 4:13am
you would be able to find a bosch one that would fit 100amp probly 300-450 mark new

intrade, Apr 15, 4:40am
you cant make a alternator make more power that is a mythos that you either will find out the hard way that it wont work. only way is to fit a more powerful alternator if they make it with same bracket. or altering the holding brackets. go and see .dasko they are now in auckland

Not a problem to weld and so forth but very dificult to do this when boat is in the water all the time. It would be great to know if there is a higher output alternater that would bolt straight up. Every job turns out to be a mission when the boat is in the water and nearly an hour from home. Thanks for the replys so far.

just repair the old one, brushes and bearings probably, unless it is totalled, then a few dollars at the wreckers, fit new brushes and refit
35amp has got to be enough for starter batteries unless you're running a water taxi and starting it every 5 minutes
or it is a right arse to start, in which case fix the starting
doesn't seem logical to fit say a 75 amp or a 90 amp ex jap or some other, and have to modify etc to fit, even that old 35 amp one would have the batteries recharged after 1/4 hr of running and then just sit there gobblin hp for the rest of the day
that old 17acl would have had a remote regulator too - and that could be your issue right there - they were adjustable, and they also were prone to partial fail especially if they got damp
in a boat = damp = very likely
clean the contacts and check for rust

skin1235, Apr 15, 6:37am
so next time out there, bring the alt and the reg home, drop them at the sparky, refit next time you head back

snoopy221, Apr 15, 6:43am
Now how do ya read that tape measure skin!
acl!-or acr!
17ACR is IC reg'd.common garden lucas.

skin1235, Apr 15, 6:58am
doh, thanks snoop, I need new glasses huh lol

acr is as snoop said, internal regulated so thats one worry out of your way

and yes those brushes should fit, from memory the brush holder can be removed, new brushes fitted and replaced without removing the alt,

that condenser thingy is a radio suppressor, stops alt whine coming through and stops interference on the (short-wave, cb, 2 mt or whatever radio system you have for calling for help when the fish are too big to get in the boat)
1000cca means it has plenty of cranking power, that alt will keep them healthy if it is working

planted4u, Apr 15, 7:04am
Thanks skin and snoop I will buy those brushes and fit them. An easy cheap fix. Those fish you speak of skin.I am yet to find but allways lookin

a 17 acr has common reg and rectifier problems very rarely are they out of brushes just generally an old outdated alt parts are cheap you can replace them brand new for $150 retail. You can mount a bosch one same mount some pully size and section and all you would have to do is change the wiring at the back no biggie. also NB alternators sense batt voltage and charge accordinly so they are not sitting there gobling up horse power. some alternators are better at this than others especially ones that have a 'sense' terminal on them I would recommend changing it if you have 1000cca batteries also the set voltage point on a acr is to low by todays standards to charge modern batteries.

bigfatmat1, Apr 15, 9:08am
also brushes for an acr should retail for $3.40 $12 is way overpriced

1000 CCA are normaly modern light weight with light seperator plates.
And do NOT like start loads when even a fraction down in voltage.

P.S. mat is one fulla ere who IS a damn well qualified auto sparky.

planted4u, Apr 15, 7:29pm
Thanks Mat, Could you give me a model number or car that the Bosch (that mounts the same) alt is off so I could source one please

intrade, Apr 15, 7:48pm
i told you to take it to dasko silverdale

bigfatmat1, Apr 16, 12:51am
there is that many configerations you will need to take it in to a sparky and have him measure it up and match it up for ya good luck. I have replace them with bosch units many a time.

ceebee2, Apr 16, 5:07am
I used to overhaul those for a garage on contract and have heaps of spares. Most common fault is the crap useless silicon diode set which dissolve when you look at them, and occasionally they zap the reg. All still availabel cheap as. The bearings are available from Repco for about $6 each, I used to know the bearing number off by heart!

skin1235, Apr 16, 5:15am
so obviously they were not the most robust alts in the world then huh
how many would have been produced - most of the late 60's european fords, triumphs, rovers, austins including mini's, morris - leyland, shall we say several million perhaps - not surprising most sparkies know them

but, they did a good job for a lot of owners for a long time too, would it bebetter to repair the old one and ensure the system is clean, ie not about to spike or blow it again soon, or fork out for an expensive replacement, get the wiring changed etc

bella-boo, Apr 16, 5:26am
The key word in your post is 'launch'.Most boat engines have marinised alternators, and other electrics, that are more resistant to salt air and moisture.Somewhere on the engine will be an engine number, talk to a boating mechanic to find a suitable replacement, or you will end up with problems again.Good luck.

I had to get a brand new ACR 17 for my Triumph last year, $180 fitted.

They're not good like modern Jap ones, but they're not priced like modern jap ones either.

beast9, Apr 16, 5:39am
go to any wreckers yard a pick thru there heap of alts to you find one that matchs your mounting one and put it in all you will have to do is alter some of the wires on it which isnt hard i took an acr17 off a rover due to battery probs and fitted an old jap one lying round good as gold nowmost alts have a big post that goes to bat + then a two pin plug one goes to the charge lightthe other goes to bat +

ceebee2, Apr 16, 5:39am
I also have a boat with a standard alternator in it.no problem as I have stripped it and sprayed a CRC product called "softseal" inside it, no rust for some years.
