WRONG.

A significant portion of the price of every tank of fuel is made up of Government taxes and levies. At the moment, 59.129 cents per litre is collected by the government as fuel excise (excluding GST), which is made up of:
???48.524 cents - National Land Transport Fund
???9.90 cents - ACC Motor Vehicle Account
???0.66 cents - Local Authorities Fuel Tax
???0.045 cents - Petroleum or Engine Fuels Monitoring Levy

So why not increase the ACC part of the licence fee in the cost of petrol from the 9.9c already included in the cost of petrol. You cant drive your car without buying the fuel therefore you are paying the tax as you driveinsted of paying the tax in one lump sum every year weather you drive or not.

This would be better for most people as you only pay for what you use.

This would reduce the cost of a year licence down to about $60-70 which everone would be able to afford and there would be alot more complyance.

You would not pay your power company a fixed sum at the start of the year for power weather you use it or not would you !

You're not reading my post as it is written. I know about the pittance of ACC that is already included as a fuel levy. But that still goes to the Motor Vehicle Account to cover injuries from motor vehicles like I said.

It doesnt really matter where or if you pay the ACC tax. If you own 2 or more vehicles you are paying it twice. If you dont licence your vehicle you dont pay it at all but still recieve the ACC if you have a vehicle accident.

Im just saying that the ACC would be better collected at the pump payed by people who use it in their vehicles and are more at rick than the vehicle which is licenced and sits in the garage most of its time.

People already pay the govt taxes on fuel if you use it in other engins than a vehicle so its just accounting where you pay the acc to but at the end of the day you will recieve acc cover weather you pay the acc tax or not.

Maby the ACC tax would be less if the govt collected it at the pump rather than a honesty system as the current vehicle licence system is now

It does matter because there are different accounts that are used to determine the levies based on claims within those accounts.

There are other solutions. Such as plates registered against a person, not each and every vehicle that person owns. So you can use YOUR plates on any vehicle.
