ahuh.

rob_man, Jun 19, 6:00pm
Why is it that whenever someone is a bit pissed off about something, the media feel the need to include the word outrage in a headline!
Whenever I see it the hyperbole filter is enabled.

kazbanz, Jun 19, 6:17pm
outrage at the police--yet the offender is barely mentioned

"David Rendina said police told him to pull into the emergency lane near the Epping exit of the Hume Highway as they commandeered cars on Saturday morning. Mr Rendina, who was travelling with his partner and children, aged eight and nine, said drivers were told to fill all the freeway lanes.

''I pretty much knew I was a sitting duck,'' he told ABC radio 774. ''I just remember seeing him speeding towards me and going, 'Well, there's nothing I can do here, I just have to sit here'.''

The speeding driver smashed into the electrician's car and several others as he tried to avoid the roadblock."

!

So this wasn't in NZ!

saffa2, Jun 19, 6:22pm
"The speeding driver smashed into the electrician's car " at 30 kmh.

friendly_prawn, Jun 19, 6:54pm
pretty simple. If it was me and the police told me to use my car as a road block while my family were on board, I would have told him to kiss my ass.
I would refuse to stop and would make sure and park my car where it was least likely to get hit. Family would come long before anything a cop says.
Whats the worst they could do, charge you with failing to stop. stuff em.
The fact the collision happened at 30kph is irrelevent although its still enough to kill some one if your car is hit in the right spot. The point was no one knew what speed the chased car was going to hit the parked cars at. he could have been high on drugs and on a suicide mission.
Now if I was alone, that would be a tottally different scenario. I would happily join in the fun.But with family on board, I would have told the cop where to go.

Yeah, i read that, there was a woman driver crashed into a barrier in Los Angeles on the same day, gee, theyre going to have to put a stop to these things.

friendly_prawn, Jun 19, 8:32pm
that puts a differnt spin on things. they didnt even know they were being used as a road block. lol tricky police.

hopie, Jun 19, 8:48pm
Agreed FP - if that was my family too id tell them where to shove it also.

XPfairmount - no it was in Aussie Saturday morning

Saffa - yeah he did hit it at 30Ks, but was doing 200 upto that point. Like FP said - he could of thought f#ck this, the only way threw this barricade is volocity and hit it at 120+ / the fact that he didnt is his only saving grace and the reason why he is not up on man-slaughter and/or murder charges x10.

Insurance companys are going to have a field day with this.

edited to say apparently they were told to stay in their cars.

richardmayes, Jun 19, 8:54pm
It's lucky it wasn't any faster then.

Based on those two news articles it seems like an incredibly reckless decision by the police to put civilians (incl small children) in harm's way.

If the speeding driver had been going faster and hit harder, someone could have been killed.

elect70, Jun 19, 9:26pm
Why didnt plodsdo theirpitmanouvreonly need 3 cars .!

thejazzpianoma, Jun 20, 12:02am
I have seen similar stupidity here as well. Like the time I saw Police had traffic backed up half way around a blind 100km/h corner while doing a breath test checkpoint. When I raised the issue with the Cop who breath tested me he didn't even seem to understand there was a danger.

Its time NZ and Australia both had a team of "mystery shoppers" checking on how road Policing is handled. As it stands in NZ road policing matters are even exempt from investigation by the Police Complaints Authority.

I don't think people have any idea just how many innocent citizens are hurt or killed as a result of Police stupidity.

msigg, Jun 20, 12:12am
More like public stupidity.

thejazzpianoma, Jun 20, 12:16am
Not at all, just like in the example above the Police don't need to be chasing a criminal to put innocent lives at risk. They manage that all by themselves.
