Jazz Ive actually looked into a Scudo as my next van to replace the Hiace but.
There's no agent in Tauranga, Bizzare since we are NZs 6th largest city.

I thought its better to get reliability info from Europe since there are so many there and very few here, so from a Euro website

http://www.roadtestreports.co.uk/road-test-reports/Fiat/Scudo/
The Fiat got 2.5 stars out of 5 from 60 reviews
The Ducato got 2.5 stars out of 5 from 113 reviews
The Mecedes Vito got 2.5 out of 5 from74 reviews
The VW Transporter got 3 stars out of 5 from 198 reviews
The Hiace got 4.5 stars out of 5 from 73 reviews
This from the Euros home market and cheaper than the hiace (Jap vehicles cost more than Euros in the UK)
The Scudo was not to bad until the new model launch in 2008 when it went downhill quickly
Seems maybe the Jappas are regarded favourably over there too

The van itself is fine, just the drivetrain lets it down and the fact that the rear is normally empty, meaning no weight on the rear wheels.
Had a similar problem with my last Hiace. It would get stuck if I pulled over on the side of the road into the grass, even when one wheel was still on the hard. Solved it now, got a 4WD one.
As for OP's issue, I agree with previous poster. Put an LSD in it. Makes a big difference. My current van has LSD, rarely do I need to engage 4WD.
