our V6 toyota surf started running rough then progressed to a loud metallic tapping noise. It can still be started and runs but does not sound healthy. Any help appreciated

typical/usual 3VZ-FE. problem
throw it out and stick a 1UZ- FE in it.
yes it's that bad its worth considering an engine platform change.

possibly something in the valvetrain has let go, or maybe even the timing belt has skipped a tooth or two and valve contact has happened. You're going to have to get a trained ear to listen to it simple as that and hope that its nothing too serious.Transplanting those 3VZ engines in and out is a pig of a job.

allmost all V6 make problems number 1 issue is rear head cracking. the vr6 from vokswagen is not having this problem probably due to not being a true V engine the problem is not limited to toyota , I seen plenty american european V engine distruct similarly I would go and do what poster 2 recommended and fit a better engine but use the whole wiring loom from the new engine or scrap metal if its body is rusty.
