Yea ya right, but all the dealers down here certainly are not starving, even the paid staff are doing just fine. And no ones gone out of business in the last 10 years or more. A dealer from outa town came and set up years back but was gone in a month, so things can't be all that bad.
What amuses me is when they won't budge at all so the deal falls through. Then a month or so later they discount the car by thousands. Way more than one expected as discount in the first place.
I did a deal on line with a bike once, Agreed on trade for my near new bike and I didn't ask for a dime off theirs. However they wanted me to pay freight on both the bikes? I said aaaaah, no. I will pay for mine to go up there and you pay for yours to come down. Na, they wouldn't. So deal fell through and I went and got same bike elsewhere no worries at all.
Then months later they took 2k off the bike lol. It would have cost them $400 to freight it me but they took a bigger loss instead, go figure.
I rarely ask for discount anyway, but always get something anyway most times.
