Chipping diesel with a company

A company in Auckland. Redline I believe offering diesel remap ecu or something similar for $895. The extra torque sounds nice for towing but wondering will this put to much pressure on turbo and engine. ? They reckon it won't. Also the dmf will this be harder on it ?

Sorry it's for an 09 3lt ranger

Ive got a 2013 Ranger and have just fitted a stand alone chip that piggy backs the factory system. Little adjustable box with a plug at each end, simply unplug the connector from the fuel rail and plug into the magic boxes loom, then plug the other end of the loom from the black box to the fuel rail. This is the 3rd of these devices I have purchased. The first was for a Dodge Nitro, the 2nd a D4D Hilux and now ranger. I have been very impressed with the performance and economy gains.

I have purchased all of them off ebay direct from the place that makes then in Germany. They specialise in these devices for common rail diesels and they are way cheaper than anything in Nz. last one was NZD $399 including freight and as parcel was under NZD $400 no GST or any associated added costs this end. TDC technologies is the supplier from memory.

They are tuneable as to how much perofmrance increase you want, simple to do and I set mine up so that they give the biggest performance gain in the 80 to120km/h acceleration range in top gear.

As to the DMF, made no difference but U have been very carefull to not abuse clutches on DMF vehicles and get on or off the clutch quickly. With real heavy loads and hill starts I have resorted with the hilux to taking off in low range, then shifting up to high range on the fly once underway. My hilux had just under 200,000km on the clock when I sold it.It had towed as much as 4 tonne and no problems at all with clutch or DMF .But I was aware of the DMF problems and drove to avoid risking damage.

heres a link, I have nothing to do with this company, other than being a happy repeat business customer.

Cheers mate. Yeah I'm learning to get on and off the clutch as quick as possible. Towing 2.1 ton and mostly flat ground

"Extra Torque" should give you a hint. How can the engine produce more torque without putting more pressure on the engine, and most likely the turbo?

Will it impact the life of the engine? Probably not, but if anything untoward does happen to the engine or transmission don't expect help from the manufacturer via the CGA.

mad_signtist, Nov 13, 5:36am
It's a private sale 155km on clock so I'm not going back to anyone all onus will be on me

you are a brave lad. I hhave done a lot of research into 'chipping'. Although what you have done seems great what that little box does is in fact increase the fuel line pressure. So instead of running an already high fuel rail pressure you have increased it to extremely high levels. This can result in stuffed fuel injectors. = $$$$$$$$$.

ask any specialized tuning company and they will say steer clear of the magic boxes because they will be the death of a common rail engine.

The only safe way to tune a modern diesel seems to be an ECU remap. Spend the little extra and do it properly. $895 seems reasonably good

A friend has done 50k+ in a chipped Colorado 7. Lots of mid-range torque and hasn't broken yet. Overall just an average vehicle. Don't know whose chip was used.

How long before it goes bang.

stevo2, Nov 13, 5:59am
I keep asking myself, if a manufacturer can achieve more power and or torque as well as better fuel economy by simply changing a chip, why wouldnt they do it in the factory.
It would given them a real selling advantage over the opposition.

2get1, Nov 13, 6:06am
My Nitro had 60km on the clock when fitted, 120,000km when sold, no issues what so ever and I have kept in contact with the buyer, around 200,000km now, no problems or issues what so ever.

My hilux was 120,000km when I fitted, 186,000 when sold, no a single problem or issue and again I have kept in contact with the buyer, no issues at all.

Did you read the link ? from memory the company states that they do not just increase fuel pressure.

I do regular maintenance on all my own vehicles, including fuel filters and have never ever had any injector problems at all. I chuck a bottle of injector cleaner in maybe twice a year when I do an engine oil and filter change.

2get1, Nov 13, 6:08am
you could say the same for decent wheels and tyres, better suspensions, exhausts, after market turbos intercooler etc etc. why because the are happy to build an average performing vehicle for the average driver

bigfatmat1, Nov 13, 6:08am
I know for certain that some manufactures support computer remaps and piggy back items like mentioned above and warranty still applies as long as they are approved item or company there is no problem. If however it was purchased off eBay I would say there would be a problem.

2get1, Nov 13, 6:10am
a lot of different things can cause a turbo diesel vehicle to go bang, not allowing the turbo to spool down, and just shutting the engine off after full boost hard driving and starving the turbo of oil, that causes a lot of diesels to go bang. Ive had 3 chipped vehicle now, drive them hard, tow a lot of weight with them, never had a problem

tweake, Nov 13, 6:20am
early ones did but most now don't. they fool the ecu into thinking the fuel pressure is low and the ecu adjusts the injection open time to compensate. injector open longer means more fuel goes in.
downside is that its right across the whole range regardless of how much boost or lack of boost. so it will over fuel in the off/low boost situation.

there are better chips that will take into account airflow etc.

tweake, Nov 13, 6:24am
emissions. as simple as that.
a lot are detuned to make them comply.

2get1, Nov 13, 6:43am
as far as Im aware from all 3 vehicles Ive done this to, all got improved fuel economy aswell as more power. So I don't know that they were ever over fuelled. One would think that over fueling would result in worse fuel economy.

stevo2, Nov 13, 6:44am
In that case, why dont they just alter the chip so that it knows when its being tested and de-tune accordingly. then when the testing is finished, it can re-tune to the higher output.
seems like a logical solution to me.
Wonder the manufacturers haven't thought of that one.

2get1, Nov 13, 6:46am
I don't know that there's anything to worry about with the company I used and refered to with the link, nearly 2500 of them sold 100% positive feedback.

tweake, Nov 13, 7:13am
nice one. Go VW !
LOL

sred69, Nov 13, 7:15am
Don't forget to get low volume certification and also tell your insurer.

2get1, Nov 13, 7:36am
they would never know unless they stripped the vehicle. the ones I use have a factory looking loom and I could have it removed with no evidence of it ever having been there in less than 60 seconds. LVV cert is only needed if you increase power by 20 or 25%.

pico42, Nov 13, 7:56am
"Note: LVV certification is always required for the fitting of a supercharger or turbocharger as a modification, or the upgrading of a supercharger, turbo or wastegate, or the re-chipping of electronic engine control units on turbo vehicles."

2get1, Nov 13, 8:07am
lucky mine hasn't been rechipped then aye lol doesn't mention stand alone boxes lol and as I said they would never know unless they stripped the vehicle down, and it can be removed so quickly that if you had an accident or whatever you could if that worried about it, remove it in less than a minute

stevo2, Nov 13, 8:14am
Bit hard to you when you're lying in an ambulance on the way to intensive care.
