Really? What year do you think? Airbags?

I thought people always died in frontal crashes in a Hiace? And this was a double crash!

My thoughts exacty. Damn the cab over engine gives you pause for thought!

By the passengers seat , its a Toyota Hiace, definitely not a Mazda Bongo/Nissan Vanette.

95/96? The Passengers mirror really looks like a Hiace one. Kaz could well be right though. It doesn't have those stupid little front corner panels, but not all of them did (most do though).
Edit to add http://nelsonlive.co.nz/news/2015/06/driver-lucky-alive-cow-crash/ (I still think its a Hiace)

Hiace.
I was in a 96 4wd hiaceand was hit head-on by a corolla driver who had fogged up window in a 50 kph zone, I was able to almost stop and he was still going at 50kph. I got seatbelt burn. Had to tape the headlights back in, but was able to drive off. Corolla was munted, engine pushed back, windscreen smashed etc.
Big forked chassis under front of hiace's.

Double crash probably helped.

Definitely a '90's Hiace. Looking at pic in edangus' link you can tell by the shape of the B pillar and window in the sliding door.
