Vehicle damaged by theft

Someone I know had his car stolen but recovered by police the next day. A side glass was broken and some wiring was damaged.

This got me thinking about whether damage caused by theft or attempted theft are covered by insurance. Assuming comprehensive car insurance, if a car is stolen and taken for joy ride and damaged, is it covered by insurance?

you don't know how badly any car has been treated before you owned it.

agree.

Treat it to a basic service and carry on.

Just remember that the glass is and can be covered separately.
So break the costs in two -
(a) the supply and fitting of the glass, which has no excess.
(b) the repairs to the wiring.

There will be an excess on the repairs, so unless the repairs (without the window costs) outstrip the excess, then there is no sense in claiming. But the Insurance Co will pay to replace the window no matter what.

It's not out of order to insist on a full mechanical check, valet, cut & polish, oil change if it's likely to have been caned. And a wheel alignment.

If all this outweighs the excess, then it's not an issue lumping the window in with the claim. More probably to owners benefit, as most only allow one window per year - so if it's lumped in, there is a chance the window won't be recorded as a glass claim.

a friend had his legacy b4 stolen.
thrashed until it blew up doing skids.

insurance replaced windows and locks and got new tyres.
they also had the engine redone as it blew the head gaskets.

all up about 6-8k worth of work.

car was never the same afterwards though so he flicked it

I had a friend who had his falcon stolen, upon its return it had a whining diff which he stated was not evident before it was stolen. The insurance paid out for a recond diff.

maybe they are selling to you because it was stolen and dont know how it was treated, not that they would tell you that.
