Rover 75 gearbox issues

I have a 2000 Rover 75 Connoisseur which has over a short period of time developed a gearbox issue that is difficult to diagnose. I hope someone on here might know what the issue is. On the 75 dashboard is a standard visual digital display that shows which gear the car is in, however suddenly this gear display can disappear and when it does the car when say at the lights will not have any power and creeps up into possible third gear. When this happens I have to pull over turn the engine off then back on and this can clear the issue. Lately however the display will show EP and again I loose power when first starting off. Today when I went to reverse the display showed 'R' but the car wouldn't even move backward yet as I started to go forwards (which I was able to do) the car seemed to jerk and then reverse worked again. I did have the car scanned a few days ago which came back with a diagnosis of "3rd gear ratio out of range" if that's any help, or is it something as simply as the gearbox fluids needing to be topped up or even changed etc. Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Beautiful cars but sadly they are a $4it box. It would be worth trying new oil in the gear box and resetting all the codes with the view that there is a chance that might improve it, if that doesn't work sell it at any price and buy another car, maybe not what you want to hear but it is the least painful option. The resale value of them is low at the best of times and repairing it will almost certainly cost more than the car is worth.

Was the code a P0733?

It sounds like a fluid level or mechatronic unit problem. You may be able to find more by searching for the transmission model number which is JF506E. With the Rover not being a huge sales success you are likely to find more info on a VW site or one of the other manufacturers who used this transmission.

First things first though, did the garage check the fluid level?

When was the fluid last changed?

They are not a brilliant transmission but are miles ahead of the absolute rubbish Jatco are now making.

If the fluid level is correct probably the best next port of call would be a good transmission specialist. Get some idea of costs for valve body replacement etc. It may not be worth repairing unfortunately, depending on the value of your Rover. Best of luck

Just had a wee look. You can buy a refurbed and upgraded valve body for these with warranty for about $800. If you can find someone to confirm the issue and fit it for you, it might almost be worth saving. But try the fluid level etc first. How many km on the car?

Mum bought a 1999 Rover 75 back in 2011, it has been reasonably reliable despite people saying they are a $4it box. It has the 2.0L 4cam V6 engine and 5-speed auto, one of the first cars to have a transverse 5-speed auto. Unfortunately the nice auto gearbox failed at about 110,000kms and cost a fair bit to repair. They are a lovely car to drive and be in, beautiful interior, I hope you fix the problem and enjoy the car.

The only good thing about that car is the motor. because it's a Honda.

meow_mix, Jul 13, 8:41pm
Yes I think the engine shares it's roots with the Honda Legend V6.

gph1961, Jul 13, 8:57pm
really?

esprit, Jul 13, 9:37pm
Rover KV6 is nothing to do with Honda, not related in any way.

agreed
the weak and feeble minded believe those who sound creditable until revealed not so

And along with the 4 cylinder K series engines used in smaller turn of the century Rovers and MGFs I understand it has the same problems: leaking head gaskets due to stretching of the bolts which hold the whole engine together and leading to warping of heads and blocks. One reason why all of these cars, which should have been very very good, can now be had for little money. Rover 75 was $75000 new, and values are now next to nothing.

andy61, Jul 14, 8:56pm
They suffered from sinking cylinder liners due to a weak seal at the bottom of the cylinder liner leading to insufficent sealing at the head gasket as well as many other issues. Does the current MG from China still use the K series engine?

I'd just get rid of the thing for whatever you can get for it. seriously! It's guaranteed grief. People buy these cars because of the lovely "Englishy" look and feel of them, and I get why they like that aspect of them, but all things considered they were still created by a company that was adrift and in a death spiral because of terrible long term quality. Go get yourself a Jag X type or any other Jaguar that takes your fancy for a better experience.

andy61, Jul 15, 9:11am
Gosh the Jags were just as bad as Rovers, some of them are rebadged Mondeos and they are shockers.

franc123, Jul 15, 3:28pm
It's still a better option than living with something made by a deceased company a long time ago. If it's got Mondeo parts in it, so what? It's not a bad thing when it comes to repairing one.

thejazzpianoma, Jul 15, 4:05pm
You do realise that the X type uses exactly the same transmission don't you?

Made by a Japanese Nissan Subsidiary?

Also the same exact transmission as found in a Mondeo so none of your answers would be of any help to the OP in this instance.

Our WoF mechanic. who knows his older cars, said those Jaguars mentioned here need one vital tool kept on hand at all times - a cell phone with the AA breakdown service number recorded and ready to call at the press of a button.

rovercitroen, Jul 15, 8:27pm
As a Jaguar owner myself they can be a fickle mistress. The old saying about Jaguars - "at least you have somewhere nice to sit while you wait for the tow truck" I can identify with.

franc123, Jul 15, 8:51pm
So that being the case since you know so much about these things why didn't you recommend earlier that the Mondeo trans could be fitted as a cheap alternative if the factory trans in the Rover was found to be unserviceable or not economical to rebuild? I'd wager they are NOT exactly the same and not interchangeable. Also why repeatedly use this retarded terminology of referring to the Jatco and Aisan transmission companies as being subsidiaries of Nissan and Toyota since you know so much about them? It's down right weird, use the proper names.

Jaguar can be a fickle mistress.
Alas reason i started working contract was a smart arse young mechanic where i was one day.
Conversation ended up being such as well so happens having just moved and seen an xjs on the hoist at the garage at the end of the driveway virtually.
Said to yon smart alec maybe i should go gizz a job.
Same jag came back 6 months later for a warrant and i failed it on hand brake.
Heard the great horror story about how it had taken three days and no-one wanted to work on it.
L M A O
Hera ya go boys watch this and time me 20 minutes drive in drive out new handbrake pads and yip on contract you CAN charge 8 hours on ya time sheet.

snoopy221, Jul 15, 8:59pm
developed a gearbox issue that is difficult to diagnose. I hope someone on here might know what the issue is

End of the day it'll probably be a hairline crack in a piston in the trans

And these fullas used to have a website but however are damn good and contactable

Why does it not surprise me that you find the truth a strange language?

If you were comprehending what I was saying you would understand that it is highly unlikely they need another transmission. I have already explained the likely issue and the most economical approaches to repair.

Jazz needs to get back on his meds, he gone loopy again!

franc123, Jul 15, 9:12pm
Not answered the questions. Typical.
