I think the dynamic was played up for the camera.
Mike is a complete burke and Edd has to bail him out with his skill set!
Was a good show, quite enjoyed it.

True, it’s more of a hobby for them from those I’ve spoken to.

“Better than standing around in a pub doing nothing” one said.

smallwoods, Jun 26, 3:53am
In the years after the start, they did put the man hours up at the final costing.
The shipping costs back to UK where in the costings, just like his trips to Europe.
They made more money out of the imported cars than the local buys.
Had a laugh at Mikes spin off show.
When is Edd's on?

kazbanz, Jun 26, 4:53am
Actually-Im no so sure Mike was such a doofus as was made out in the show.
In a couple of the later us episodes you see him working on cars when ed 'wasn't available" (trying to get a previous project finished) he showed a level of competence in the above average end of the home mechanic range.

It's a good show, flows well even my Mrs likes it gives her a good laugh. Mike & Edd work well together and draws in viewers from a broad spectrum. The show itself is a means of attracting the Advertising $$$$ and a way of bringing in new members to the Sky Corp. WD certainly beats some of the brain dead car shows on offer from the US that caters to the Zombies over there.

gpg58, Jun 26, 6:57am
Not sure if it has the go ahead yet.
But found he has a new youtube channel as well, with another new show called "Built by many".

one thing i have learnt from this show, dont buy a car and do it up and expect to make money,go find a barn find instead and sell it as is

elect70, Jun 26, 8:54am
Im sure Discovery paid them for this , no way could ed survive on the so called proffits . But its better than watching coro street & ive picked up a few tricks ive seen Ed do .- The yank shows are different there they'l pay silly money fo old tanks full of rust fix em up & flog them for silly money & no shortage of buyers . Guess they are bored with todays hi tech cars .

inkapuka, Jun 28, 5:02pm
Edd China is doing his own thing on YouTube hasn't done much yet but he's not getting paid tv money anymore.

brokebloke1, Jul 8, 2:44am
one show i do like watching is ,,, car sos , its a bit like the us overhauling show but a british verison, that works on the cars i was bought up on ( mk1 zepher, VW beetle, escorts, etc.

flack88, Jul 8, 3:32am
#27 you probably got to put a full burkha on now. These Cranford street Taliban in CHCH let you walk around and grab stuff, staked 3 high they don't give a fark probably not to many Worksafe in Kabul, with there heads intact anyway!

intrade, Jul 8, 12:56pm

God that Mike Brewer is a total brainless jerk, hasn't got a clue about cars, just watched him thrash the pants off an AC Cobra replica, fark, if it was my car I'd punch him in the head, Edd was right to leave that crappy show.

sifty, Sep 29, 2:51pm
Edd is very watchable. The lanky, posh mechanic who actually shows you how to do stuff. Hope he gets his own platform.

tgray, Sep 29, 2:54pm
What do you expect him to do, sedately drive it around the block?
It is a TV show after all.

supernova2, Sep 29, 3:40pm
I watch it and just get cross.
Buy a piece of junk
Spend a zillion hours on it and it's still a piece of junk but shiny now
Sell it
Then say you made money out of it without putting any value at all on the labour.

It could have been a good programme but like all reality TV it's just all smoke and mirrors.

tgray, Sep 29, 3:46pm
It's entertainment. Nothing more, nothing less.
If it was a business model, it would not last more than 6 months.

kazbanz, Sep 29, 3:47pm
supernova--actually edds contribution was always aimed at helping the DIY mechanic--showing them its possible to .

supernova2, Sep 29, 3:56pm
Eds ok but even he glosses over a lot of steps that the DIY people might just assume is the way to do it.
The paint jobs with spray cans. They spend hours sanding and grinding and the 'shop never gets dirty.
Who would even attempt engine work in a panelshop environment?
Nah it's not even close to reality.
The last few Mike's buying yank junk and shipping it back to the UK. What the hell does that cost?
More to the point why?
I can understand getting stuff from Europe as that's just next door but even then most of them were nothing special and probably could have been got from the local equivalent of Trade Me.

whqqsh, Sep 29, 3:59pm
funniest piece of made for TV car makeover ever, best over-reaction & worst acting. They've done up a BMW (devalued more like it) & it catches fire in the workshop
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFGKxXcw9-o

purple666, Sep 29, 4:18pm
Give me a mechanic that works for free and I'll show you how to make money doing up cars, funny how they never mention that part.

pettal, Sep 29, 4:22pm
I always assumed Mike supplied the dollars and Ed the labor/skills and the profit was split between them .

socram, Sep 29, 4:39pm
Mike annoys me by looking at the camera whilst driving. Big no-no in my book, even if on seemingly deserted roads, it is a bad habit.

intrade, Sep 29, 5:35pm
The profit they call it never included labour he worked for peanuts if the show was anything remotely real.
