Toyota Aqua 2015 traction control

We have bought the wife a Toyota Aqua hybrid. Drives around town OK. Wife drove from Auckland to Whangarei and rang me to say the car shudders and slows down for no apparent reason. It did it about 6 times to Whangarei and back. I drove it the following weekend to Whangarei and it did it about 12 times. I noticed the traction control comes on when it happens. My wife is afraid to drive it on the open road now. We took it back to dealer, and their workshop cant find anything wrong with it. It only happens 60+ Kms hr. Any ideas what next step is ? Thanks in advance

Is the ABS warning lamp coming on at the same time? This is critical information.

First thing I would be checking with the car is tyre size and condition.
Then I agree with Mech to ask what was the road surface.

The road surface is chip tarseal and dry. No other dash lights apart from the car with zig zag lines under. It happened really badly on windy roads. tyres are all good but i'll have to check to make sure all are the same size. Car is still with dealer as it gives you a fright with the vibration through the steering wheel, and wife doesn't want to drive it until it is fixed.

Yes check all tyres size same and good tread, take it back to the dealer if bought recently to get checked over.check gearbox oil.

It is back with dealer. Their mechanic can't find any problems.

The tyre pressures and sizes need to be checked as well as the steering angle sensor and yaw sensor calibration needs to be checked and recalibrated if needed. If this checks ok the next step would be check wheel alignment and the speed sensors need to be checked on a scope to make sure the tone rings are not damaged. Edit and obviously check fault codes for the esc abs

Tell the dealer to find a better mechanic. BF mat already posted where the problem will be found.

There is a lot to set up in modern cars, but this is all ok around town. I reckon it's the shitty roads up here.

Funny that the woman only gets it six times, male twelve. haha.

Some years ago I had a Mazda B2200 that wore out the front tyres quickly on the outside edges. I did a lot of quite fast miles over the Mangamukas as I was almost commuting between Kaitaia and the Hokianga with a ute full of tools and building materials.
I experimented with different tyre pressures, and different brands when the first tyres wore out. I couldnt avoid the problem no matter what I did.
When I stopped doing that journey with its left, right, left, right tight corners the tyre wear never got any worse and the problem disappeared when I changed to the final set of tyres before I sold that ute.

A well loaded vehicle being pushed on winding roads is going to have more tyre wear than normal.

Thank you everyone or your input. I phoned dealer back and emailed a copy of this thread to him. He didn't seem to understand the problem as he said come and pick up the car, if it happens again just turn the key off, wait 10 secs and turn back on. I told him to pass this thread to his mechanic. I said I would like to talk to his mechanic. So I will call into dealer tomorrow.

Start with tyres ideally all 4 should be the same brand, equal wear and set to.correct pressure.

I drove a Suzuki Swift all around the far north and it was great. No need for some crappy 4WD.

I know its no consolation but IMO it isn't anything major. Just that the affect right now is major. In this situation given no joy from the dealer. I would STRONGLY recommend taking the vehicle to a Toyota service centre.Make it clear that if they don't find a fault you will pay but if faults are found then you expect the dealer to pay - Not that they are better or worse than any decent mechanic just that they have the specific gear for resetting the traction control.

This is the stuff i put in my memory bank from jobs.
on a 2003 mercedes C class . symptom car randomly slows you down in a corner to almost 0 kph out of the blue. Scanned found FACTORY! code For Yaw-rate pitch sensor. done tests said cant finde anything wrong 80% bad sensor as testing further will cost more then the sensor will be . Replaced problem gone.
Now why and how did it do what it did. The yawrate sensor is to work for the stability control if the car is to flip over it does apply the ABS to try and stop the car rolling.
But if its faulty it will apply the ABS randomly when ever its giving out false information. A trailer ecu is also required so the ecu knows that push on the rear is not the car starting to roll over but from the trailer on the back.
And i did say modern car are all the same bad toyota included only that mercedes had these systems 10 to 20 years ahead of Asians .
For a Toyota Launch will or should find any factory codes also as long as it is a 431 pro or a diagun or some other more high end tool. That yawrate code i did find with idiag launch also o the mercedes . but testing would have been with scope on ecu etc if the sensor call would not have fixed the issue. Stuck-jaw rate sensor or something was the code. I dont remember everything just the basic important stuff.
for toyota one needs to study how it works before testing. that above is only for that year 2003 year merc C class 100% how it has reacted.

dont get me going on VW with that crap lane assist trash wants to stop you overtaking and drive for you and when a corner comes it drops out and wants you to do it again. Be the first crap i would un-programm if i ever have a modern Heap like this The distance adaptive cruise is ok drops off when cruse drops out and brakes down hills for you to not be 1kph over speed limmit. Thats about the only good thing with these modern garbage . But just think about how much more trash there is to go wrong.

its just a simple button on dash to turn it off - though I agree I hate it too. BUT everyone has it now and those late on it are getting punished. Dacia Duster isn't getting into Aussie as they felt it was not up to spec without this shit.
