Having your car serviced is no guarantee that it isn??

trader_84, Sep 13, 12:35am
Its over rated though . don't ya reckon!

bex25388, Sep 13, 12:39am
I could get maybe half the oil i need at that rate to DIY it

bex25388, Sep 13, 12:41am
I guess hats why your not an estimator then.

lyonruge, Sep 13, 12:47am
This reminds me of a story i read about a person organising a wedding, she got a quote from a 6 peice band to play from 7 till midnight, then bitched and whined about the cost. The singer said, no worries, call the plumbers union, ask for a quote to get six plumbers to come and work for you for 5 hors on saturday night, we'll do the gig for half what they say!

bex25388, Sep 13, 12:49am
what! i dont care what your car is, but you cannot buy a filter or oil for $25. Must be preloved oil and a cleaned filter.

therafter1, Sep 13, 12:52am
No I don??

trader_84, Sep 13, 1:12am
Oh you don't reckon! Ok . just asking.

lil_mystique, Sep 13, 1:25am
Yes, but if your car is stolen or written off, you never get that money back.It is over rated. Its business.Well Im sorry its my money. My choice.

trader_84, Sep 13, 2:04am
Listen, for what its worth . the truth is probably somewhere in between I'm guessing. I'm mechanically 'apt' and know where to find out about stuff I don't know about, meaning I don't pay anyone to labour on my stuff. And further helping matters is - my ride(s) are simple old school sorta stuff. So any labour charge to me is 'too much' This said though, $30 . $50 or $100 an hour is what you can expect to be paying a commercial garage to work on your ride in todays market, I am guessing. If they didn't . they would not be around. Everything costs now days and qualified mechanics don't work for free. When it comes to basic servicing and inspection though . it isn't that hard to do. Even for someone with no formal training. Most cars are made to be serviced reasonably easily without specialist tools. Some of them you may need to be a contortionist to carry it out but you get my drift. If something sounds too much (and $195 sounds too much to me) then it probably is. But in the scheme of things . its still going to cost you twice/3 times what you originally thought I would have guessed. Times have moved on a little. But good on you for sticking to your guns and finding someone to do it for cheap. My whanau expect their waka's to be done for free, lol!

lil_mystique, Sep 13, 2:33am
Was about $46 + a banana cake.I dont have the funds for a cortortionist or needed one lol. Most people are happy to slap their wallet out and zip zap the good old gold card.

lil_mystique, Sep 13, 2:36am
I got my supplies from super cheap auto when I got a gift voucher and took them to the mechanic myself. You dont need to use their supplies.

trader_84, Sep 13, 2:49am
Yep yep! All good. Cheers!

a.woodrow, Sep 13, 2:51am
So what exactly did your $25 cover!

1ollie, Sep 13, 3:01am
For cheap shitty oil 4L is $25 and a filter is about $15 that's for a basic average smaller car, what about if you have to service your average car with some semi decent oil! 5L $45 and $20 filter, what about a average diesel van or 4WD! 6+L of oil $55+ and $20 filter and then what about if you want to service a high end/decent euro/performance car! $90 oil $20 filter etc! what about labor for all of these! just don't see how people can think its so cheap!

therafter1, Sep 13, 3:46am
Not to mention the location of basic items like oil filters in many modern vehicles and the difficulties sometimes associated with removing them, Nissan SR20??

tuttyclan, Sep 13, 5:21am
A service check for $25! I was going to suggest the red shed oil and filter for $30.98 but even thats overpriced and you would still have to do it yourself. (won't be anygood for modern cars but cant go much cheaper than that unless you recycle the oill and filter lol). Why pay somebody to get told that your oil is dirty for $25!

1ollie, Sep 13, 6:18am
Could be a new market some people have got onto! just take off there filter give it a soak in petrol for 5mins, clean it up, repaint it and put new labels on and just drain there existing oil out run it through an old stocking a few times and put it back in! BOOM easy $25 for 10-20mins work

sw20, Sep 13, 6:25am
So the labour charge was $46. OP provided the oil and filter. Not that cheap now is it.

lil_mystique, Sep 13, 7:41am
It was ok Im happy for what I got he even showed me what he was doing.Im grateful and he will get repeat business, although he prefers to work on classics.Np.Just a genuine bloke and you can all put him down and put me down or say thats great and walk away.Just saying.Any more questions read the posts lol.Cheers have a beer or 3. No hard feelings.

a.woodrow, Sep 13, 8:00am
So anyway, what all was covered in your "service"!

kazbanz, Sep 13, 8:46am
Op the trouble is that I know full well you are totally missing the point of the inspection.
Reading what you post its pretty clear you view your car as you view your TV,fridge and stove.
Trouble is that cars aren't whitewear. You DO need to do work on them no matter who or where you are.
By having an inspection/service like this carried out you will know what regular work is needed and can budget for it both in financial terms and in terms of time without the car.
If you are a car "buff" then most likely you know this stuff already.
But "appliance users" don't
Then the car "suddenly has a mechanical "problem" and they suddenly need to find money they don't have

lyonruge, Sep 13, 9:16pm
Morning Kaz! you know the old saying, "you can lead a horse."

Did you read my post at 56, .

thunderbolt, Sep 13, 10:49pm
You guys are wasting your time, OP knows best and isnt interested in being educated.
And don't feel sympathy for her when her car does breakdown, save it for the poor bugger who buys it next after hearing it has been regularly serviced.
