build one yourself, can be a light as you want with any engine you want.

bill-robinson, Feb 2, 4:14am
problem is electicity has done its dash. cheap sources no longer exist and it is very difficult to store. look on line for wind turbine runaways. very expensive to repair if at all.

People are entitled to post opinions. They are not required to supply 'supporting information' as for poor spelling and grammar well I'd suggest you don't comment on those because you have zero knowledge of that persons education, or lack of it, and you shouldn't be judging them.

If you're having trouble deciphering them then just skip those posts.

Anyone can make a submission on the report any they are open now till March 14.

For details on how to make a submission on the report, visit climatecommission.govt.nz

Is is still a nightmare to get owner builts through compliance?

bill-robinson, Feb 2, 6:41am
no. i should not difficult when i did mine about 4 years ago

Looking at live data now, wind is not going to help much. https://www.transpower.co.nz/power-system-live-data

2033 Beer and fizzy drinks are banned cause they release Co2 when you open them, 2034 Humans and Animals banned cause they exhale Co2, 2035 the whispering grass thrives but the trees still don't want to know!

gunna-1, Feb 2, 9:03am
I thought about beer and fizzy drinks, i wonder how much co2 you could pump out if you had an old lemon tree and some bakeing soda, if you did that in your green house it might make the plants grow, its s#!t like thallium that is poisoning us, not co2.

waynesb1, Feb 2, 9:32am
Yeah it's like a power company named after a similar poisonous metallic substance that buys out an alternative energy company called "what power crisis" and shelves it. RIP David

harm_less, Feb 2, 9:37am
That may be the case but solar generation would be absolutely cranking at present if the weather here is generalised nationwide.

waynesb1, Feb 2, 9:56am
I got the answer - what if the power company was made to pay people $1 for $1 for their solar energy kwh, we would be clean and green and I would still have a job in solar - Nah Too Hard let's just ban all Bottled LPG by 2025 which removes any competition to power and make the rich richer! Bravo Bravo we all pay more. whats new https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/climate-change-report-whats-the-future-of-gas/YYQ4KMX3Q3EFALSD4XM35I45VU/

apollo11, Feb 2, 10:15am
The supposed issue was that people who could afford solar panels (obviously rich) were effectively subsidised by those who couldn't. And if they are dumping water from hydro dams to keep power prices from sagging, the last thing they would want to have to do is buy back expensive solar power.

harm_less, Feb 2, 10:34am
The situation is more a sad indictment of the way NZ's generation and transmission entities are set up. The system itself is biased toward keeping the big players profitable at the expense of alternative generation by domestic customers.

However as the price and availability of PV and battery storage improve the power companies will increasingly struggle to maintain their dominance. This is the basis of the "utility death spiral" which was predicted to spell disaster for power generating utilities as increasing electricity prices and decreasing PV prices made self generation increasingly viable to the demise of the big generators, that was until EVs arrived and presented higher consumption rates.

waynesb1, Feb 2, 11:42am
All I know is I've been off grid for 7 years now and I'm not rich but the system has well and truly paid for itself but the one thing that makes it possible was gas for hot water and cooking, now they are taking that away I will be forced to either connect to power or use dirty fossil fuel for cooking and heating instead of a small amount of clean burning gas.I had next to no carbon footprint, it's all about the $$

tygertung, Feb 2, 12:02pm
What about solar hot water?

waynesb1, Feb 2, 12:31pm
Yep got that gas is just a top up but you do still need it I used to import them but had very little interest mainly cause a plumber is 85+gst /hr but you are correct it is the most efficient way to heat your water

3tomany, Feb 2, 12:49pm
That is a lot of cold showers on low sunshine days.

harm_less, Feb 2, 1:30pm
Don't underestimate the heating capacity of modern high efficiency solar hot water systems such as evacuated tube. We had one that produced hot water on days that were extremely marginal in terms of sunlight.

trade4us2, Feb 2, 1:51pm
Our solar hot water was still hot after a week of cloudy weather. Just have a bigger tank. A 500 litre plastic tank will work OK, just keep the pressure low so the tank doesn't melt.

apollo11, Feb 2, 1:53pm
I know this govt have put the kaibosh on fossil exploration, are we running out of gas?

waynesb1, Feb 2, 2:47pm
As long as there is oil and refineries there will be LPG, however they are stopping new connections to the greenest gas Natural Gas or Methane (Town Gas) also. They stopped CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) for cars years ago. In the 80's it was NZ's fuel of the future to power cars the Green Way cause it reduced Carbon Monoxide yes "Monoxide" did a politician mispronounce it some where along the way?
So in short yes maybe we are running out of the cleanest gas Methane.

framtech, Feb 2, 3:28pm
if you don't make a submission the government, by law has to implement in eight months or come up with another plan, so if everyone sits on their collective hands, we give the state total control - with no questions asked.
Can't believe the idiots that voted for this govt, you know you can't get in the country if your parent is dying of cancer, but Cindy lets in the wiggles for her 3 year old. Pack of bureaucratic bastards.

framtech, Feb 2, 3:35pm
The issue with LPG use, is that yep if you own a home, have a stable job and plan to live in the same place for years, a solar water and power system would be ok, but for others who don't have the means- LPG is a good way to go, buy a bottle and instant energy. also those that own holiday homes, with LPG you can turn the system off and instant heat when you arrive in the holidays or weekends.
Blaming climate change on the team of 5 million in the middle of a vast ocean is a bit rich and Im sure its been pulled out of the arse of dictators for their own selfish gains. Or is 3/4 of the country just thick.

harm_less, Feb 2, 4:11pm
We have some pretty heavy consumption of our existing natural gas reserves by Methanex (for methanol production) and electricity generation at Huntly (and smaller plants), Ballance (for urea production), Fonterra, and other industrial customers. Domestic use is pretty much rats and mice so discontinuing that market will make very little difference to NZ's consumption.
https://www.gasindustry.co.nz/about-the-industry/gas-industry-information-portal/gas-production-and-major-consumption-charts/
The complications that Methanex present due to its requirements of around 40% of our natural gas supply is discussed on page 63 of the Draft report (accessed via link in OP). The report also states that NZ will run out of NG but doesn't state a timeline for this.
