Harleys = Noise Pollution

How can you be sure they are have you a noise meter!

bellky, Jan 28, 5:05pm
I am a noise meter. A lot of 'harleys' (read pos) are far far too noisy!

jmma, Jan 28, 5:07pm
Oh it's a month already (o:

Them L twins play better music

splinter67, Jan 28, 5:45pm
Bugger and it was so peaceful in here never mind

desmodave, Jan 28, 5:46pm
But Weed eaters and Rotarys are ok yeah.

planespotterhvn, Jan 28, 5:50pm
Standard Harley pipes are really quiet, but every harley bike salesman throws in a free set of aftermarket pipes.

planespotterhvn, Jan 28, 5:53pm
100 db at 2 metres is really loud! Many Harleys exceed this by heaps.

esprit, Jan 28, 5:55pm
I just don't like the double-standard of it all. car owners get given hell if they're significantly louder than stock. Farting Armchair owners get to ride loud with impunity

bellky, Jan 28, 6:18pm
Yep they do, and when you're not ready for it, they scare the bejesus out of me.

Patato patato.

Nothing buddy, the fastest street legal bikes out there in terms of 1/4 mile acceleration are the Ducati Diavel, Yamaha Vmax and and then the harleys, all massive engined torque monsters.

Also love this video showing a rat chopper vs a CBR1000, torque vs HP!

Well if we're gonna base this all on stereotypes, the noise pollution shouldn't be an issue as nearly all Harley owners are accountants who use them 4 times a year. I can live with that lol

Are you the Ply Guy with a yard / store by the side of SH2! If so I like your style, guy!

Harley Davidsons have three major design flaws that all contribute to the problem you are describing.

Firstly, the Harley Davidson has a unique 60-degree v-twin engine, a configuration of cylinders carefully chosen to maximise mechanical vibration while minimising torque delivery and top-end revs.H-D engineers overcame these natural design faults by oversizing the engine to ridiculous proportions; this is why a H-D with a large 1800cc engine is capable of accelerating side-by-side with a 600cc Jap bike but no more. Fitting straight-through exhaust pipes is known to improve the performance of high-revving engines with efficient valve porting and cylinder head design, so maybe it will work on a Harley engine too, right!

Secondly; Although Harleys are among the biggest and heaviest bikes on the road (everything else has to be upsized to adequately serve the large, inefficient engine) the front wheel is usually similar in size to wheels found on BMX bicycles, and the tread patten is even more unfavourable to high speed road use than a BMX tyre. Consequently the only way of riding a Harley around a corner is to gradually slow right down on the straight, coax her around the corner nice and slowly, and then once you're out of the corner onto a straight road again open up large amounts of throttle to get back up to speed again before cars behind you start trying to overtake. Again, a loud straight-through exhaust might do something to improve this sorry state of affairs a little bit.

Thirdly, when idling up to a cafe in St Heliers, Auckland the objective is to attract as much attention to yourself as possible. Everyone knows skirt likes the smell of money, and Harleys can be very expensive. Unfortunately skirt are often not really interested in motorbikes, so they don't know this and you have to be quite direct in your attention seeking. a loud exhaust certainly goes a long way.

I dont hate the sound of a harley, definetely wouldn't call it noise pollution as its not normally at times when you want peace and quiet, BUT, yes theres always a but, I do not agree that they should be allowed to be so loud. You can have a great sounding engine without it being loud, these big pipe fullas are just attention seekers

I am offended by this notion good sir, I would not be seen dead outside of Mission Bay, one must of course keep up appearances.

A Harley with a tuned exhaust sounds OK, not as nice as a Duke,or even the big Jap V2's, but with straight through pipes they sound awful. Just blat blat blat. Why would you want to ride something that yells bag-o-shit!

dr.doolittle, Jan 29, 2:00am
Actually, it's "potato,potato,potato."

apollo11, Jan 29, 2:09am
Sorry my mistake :o) . I like potatoes.

Oh yeah!, so do headlights on so how come all the big tough HOG riders disable that function and ride without lights on!.
